11 Ways to Find Happiness in Retirement

Retirement is defined as an action or fact of leaving one’s job and ceasing to work. Or, the withdrawal of a jury from the courtroom to decide a verdict. I am not a fan of the word ‘retirement’ because both definitions sound so ending. I prefer Recreate, Reenergize or my favorite, Repurpose.

We repurpose everything to achieve something better from something that was already good and needed before. Why can’t we decide to have a new purpose? One that we recreate from our talents, career, work, hobbies and/or interests?

At Craft LifeStyle Management we work with our clients for who they are at the moment. We did not cause or create the life they had when coming under our care. Some clients have accomplished amazing things in the second chapter of their lives by finding new purpose and energy. Others have health issues and openly share they wish they’d have done more in life when they were physically able to. We also have clients who’ve chosen to rest, causing much atrophy to their minds and bodies. Sadly, they often think this time in their lives has no meaning.

The choices we make are ours. What we choose to do will determine how we live and our purpose in this stage of life. There is not a wrong or a right way. There are simply choices that belong to us.

Many think that when they retire, they are done. Thus, they withdraw. If this is what you choose, that is your choice. Maybe you don’t want to do anything more than hold down the recliner. Your health will deteriorate much sooner, but again, this is your choice.

We are at the age where many of our friends are dealing with this topic. It is invigorating to see what most of our friends are choosing in retirement. Things like joining gyms or other activities they never had time for prior to retirement.

Plan ahead for retirement. Make meaningful choices. Choices that are right for you.

Ways to Ensure Your Post-Career Years Are Filled with Purpose & Fulfillment

Find Meaningful Ways to Volunteer. Seek a cause you’re super passionate about and volunteer a couple times a month. It’s a very satisfying feeling giving back. BONUS: You may connect with a new social group-fellow volunteers.

Keep your brain working. Find something to stimulate your brain: Games on the computer, card or board games, sewing, writing, reading, photography, playing a musical instrument, trying a new recipe, learning a foreign language, etc.

Be social and reconnect with family and friends, including your spouse or partner. It may have been challenging to consistently connect when you worked full time. Heck. Live on the edge. Go out on a weeknight now and do your household shopping together mid-day, mid-week. Also, you are guaranteed an increase to your happiness by spending time playing and telling stories with your grandchildren. Take time to mend and renew valued relationships. Perhaps set up a weekly online chat with long-lost college, child or work friends. Reconnect.

Update your home. Does your house reflect the current you? If not, maybe it’s time to refresh your space with a new paint color or change up the furniture. This is a perfect time to declutter each room. This takes time but at the end you will feel proud of your updated space and more comfortable living there as it now reflects the present-day you.

Travel. Be adventurous. Push yourself out of your comfort zone. Learn something new by exploring new places, even if these are in your own community and state. Set a goal. Maybe visit all major league baseball stadiums or all national parks. Create a bucket or “no regrets list” and then start crossing items off the list as you complete them.

Renew or discover hobbies & interests. Maybe there’s something from your younger years that’s been dormant. Now is the time to re-engage and see if you still enjoy this hobby. Or, find a new one. Take an online course to test it out. Dig into your family history or write your own memoire.

Get moving. Regardless of age, exercise is always a mood booster. Staying active is important for all aspects of your health: physically, mentally and socially. Set a daily step count for your walks, attend regular exercise classes, and go swimming. Just do something active daily.

Research relocation. A growing trend is relocating for retirement. Make sure you’re clear about what makes you happy and that your finances allow this. Will happiness come from a warm climate, an urban landscape or something else? Do you desire to be near family, including grandchildren? Make a careful plan to boost your retirement happiness.

Simplify and limit distractions. Reflect on what matters most. Prioritize what is really important to you and limit worry, frustration and distractions affecting your sense of peace. Focus on the present by fully engaging in and enjoying the moment.

Stay positive. By now you know problems and health challenges arise. But you also have the life experience to navigate through these with confidence and grace. Happiness comes from this seasoned experience and understanding that things are not always going to be perfect or to your liking. There’s maturity in accepting the outcome anyway.

Seek help. Retirement offers a newfound sense of freedom and flexibility but also the realization that you may not be able to do everything on your own. Asking for help may allow you to stay in your own home, keep doing activities you enjoy and connecting with others. Don’t be too proud to seek assistance.

Why Sleep is Important as One Ages

Almost a third of our lives are spent sleeping. Therefore, it’s important to understand the relationship between aging and sleep. Getting a good night’s sleep is important for both physical and mental health and one’s overall quality of life.

Poor sleep is not a normal part of aging.

Sleep patterns change as we age. Many older adults feel sleepier in the evening and awaken earlier in the morning. But disturbed sleeping and waking up tired are not part of normal aging.

How Much Sleep is Ideal?

The National Sleep Foundation National Sleep Foundation’s sleep time duration recommendations: methodology and results summary – PubMed (nih.gov) dispels the myth that older adults require less sleep.

 It strongly recommends 7-8 hours of sleep a night for adults, including seniors.

What’s Interfering with Your Sleep?

Mental and physical health conditions may interfere with sleep. These may include:

  • Depression or anxiety
  • Heart Disease and diabetes
  • Frequent Nighttime Urination (nocturia)
  • Insomnia (Most common sleep problem in those 60+)
  • Restless Leg Syndrome (Periodic limb movement disorder causing legs to jerk and kick every 20 to 40 seconds during sleep.)
  • Sleep Apnea (Pauses in breathing while sleeping)
  • Arthritis or other conditions causing discomfort and/or pain
  • Alzheimer’s Disease quite often changes sleeping habits-too much, not enough. This affects caregivers too, leaving them tired.

Side effects of medications, including over the counter medications, may also complicate sleep.

Other factors impacting sleep include:

  • Napping-keep these short and done by 3 PM
  • Less Structured Sleep Schedule
  • Electronics (TV, computer, cell phone, tablet) Used Close to Bedtime
  • Social Isolation Resulting in Stress and Anxiety
  • Waking Up During the Night

Ways to Improve Sleep

Create both a bedroom environment and daily routines to promote consistent, uninterrupted sleep. Forming and sticking to good bedtime rituals is important. Try to:

  • Set a sleep schedule. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, weekday and weekends.
  • Follow a nighttime routine. This may include locking all of the doors, ensuring all appliances are turned off, putting on pajamas, brushing your teeth and reading for a few minutes before turning the bedside lamp off.
  • Unplug from Tablets and Cell Phones. Blue light in these devices decreases melatonin (a hormone produced to facilitate sleep) production and causes mental stimulation that is difficult to turn off. Experts advise staying off these devices 30-60 minutes before you go to bed.
  • Dim the Lights and Relax. Focus on relaxation instead of the pressure of falling asleep. Try meditation, prayer, visualization and/or breathing exercises, aromatherapy, or background music or sounds.
  • Keep the bedroom at a comfortable temperature and as quiet as possible.
  • Get up. Instead of tossing and turning and getting frustrated, get up 20 minutes after trying to sleep and read or stretch. Keep the lights low and try again.

Healthy Habits Lead to Great Sleep

Pay attention to your daytime lifestyle. It also affects getting a good night’s sleep. If you aren’t already, try

  • Exercise. Get physically active.
  • Reduce Caffeine Intake. Especially true in the afternoon and evening.
  • Eat an Earlier Dinner to Avoid Food Digestion at Bedtime. Keep snacks light before bedtime.
  • Limit Bed Use. Train your brain that being in bed is used only for sleep and sex.
  • Decrease Alcohol Consumption. It may put you to sleep but as the effect wears off sleep becomes disrupted.
  • Get Sunlight. Daylight exposure encourages quality sleep.
  • Avoid Smoking. Nicotine stimulates the body in ways that disrupt sleep.

Benefits of a Great Night’s Rest

Sleep is a time of rest and rejuvenation. It allows our minds and bodies to recuperate after a long day. Sleep is also an indicator of overall health and well-being. Getting the rest you need can help you stay both physically and mentally well as you age.

  1. Sleep boosts your mood.
  2. Quality sleep lowers your risk of diseases. Lack of sleep puts added stress on the body, leading to inflammation and a weakened immune system. While sleeping, our bodies undergo restorative functions like tissue repair, muscle growth and protein synthesis-all needed to keep our immune systems strong.
  3. Sleep helps maintain weight. Getting enough sleep keeps our metabolism moving at a healthy rate. If you’re sleep deprived, metabolism slows down, leading to weight gain.   4. Good sleep improves memory and concentration. A good night’s sleep is key to a healthy brain and a sharp memory. Lack of sleep affects decision-making abilities and long-term memory. Over time, too little sleep can even contribute to cognitive decline, memory loss and increase your risk of developing dementia. Bedtime is when your brain clears harmful toxins. Sleeping Environment

Create a better sleep environment by:

  • Darkening the Room. It can be as simple as dimming the lights as bedtime approaches signaling to your brain it’s time to wind down for the night. Again, turn off electronics reducing your blue light exposure. Lower your shades or use blackout curtains. Light slows the production of melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone which promotes sleep. Consider using smart bulbs that gradually fade when it’s near bedtime and slowly brighten in the morning.
  • Lowering the Temperature. Experts consider 60 to 67 degrees optimal for high quality sleep, though this differs for everyone. Experiment and set the thermostat on what works for you.
  • Reducing the Noise. Turn off all sounds, including the TV. A quiet room is much more conducive to a peaceful night’s sleep. If you live in a noisy area, consider products that mask noise like white noise machines, floor fans, etc. Definitely move the bed off shared walls and away from street-facing windows.
  • Choosing a Comfortable Mattress and Sheet Set. The mattress, sheets and pillows you use is so important for a restful night’s sleep. The right mattress depends on your sleep position (back, side, stomach), whether you share the bed and other factors. A great pillow will support your back and neck; a poor one will have you waking up with neck pain, headaches and possibly arm numbness. Test out mattresses, pillows and sheets to understand which work best for you in achieving consistent good nights of sleep.

Keep it Safe

  • Keep a telephone nearby in case an emergency call out is needed. Avoid the temptation to look at the bright screen while trying to sleep and turn notifications off so sleep is not interrupted. If not keyed into your phone, keep a list of emergency phone numbers next to your phone on the bedside table.
  • Make sure a lamp or light is nearby. Don’t stumble out of bed subjecting yourself to a possible trip and fall.
  • Put a glass of water next to the bed in case you wake up thirsty.
  • Remove trip hazards like rugs, cords, stools and furniture.
  • Never smoke in bed.

Call the Doctor or Sleep Specialist

If you are following these good sleep habits yet consistently having sleep problems and feeling tired and unable to do your activities for 2 or 3 weeks, you may need to contact your medical professionals.

These signs of little or poor sleep quality that should be discussed with a medical professional.

  • Excessive snoring
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • A stop in breathing at night
  • Mood changes or irritability
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent awakenings at night

Why It’s Important to Have Fun While Aging

Aging is a universal process. It’s highly personal. But growing older doesn’t mean you have to stop having fun and “act your age.”

You may slow down and rightfully rest more. But don’t put the brakes on living life to the fullest, being joyful and playing.

There are endless benefits to trying new adventures and having fun while aging.

  • Improves mental and emotional health
  • Reduces anxiety and depression
  • Improves muscle strength and stamina
  • Establishes and maintains relationships
  • Improves how the brain works
  • Enhances physical vitality
  • Extends life

Keep a positive attitude. Laugh a lot, even aloud.

When you feel blue or depressed, remember it is always much better to live in the moment than to obsess about the past or worry about the future. NOTE: It is okay to feel blue or depressed temporarily. However, if you stay in this frame of mind, it’s important to look at different things to “spark” your interest.

A good outlook on life leads to lower blood pressure, less heart disease, better weight control and healthier blood sugars.

Pledge to live life to the fullest with adventure and playfulness.

Keep your body and mind active every day by engaging in both physical activity and learning from new experiences. Enjoy a vibrant, exciting time as you age.

The phrase, “Move it or Lose it” is profoundly accurate. If we don’t move our bodies even as we experience little aches and pains, the aches and pains will only worsen.

Without movement, muscles atrophy or keep deteriorating until there is nothing left. The hurt then increases resulting in loss of range of motion which can cause loss of balance and falls.

Remember, our brain is also a muscle. So, keep moving and doing.

Physical Activities

Try something new. It’s not too late to start. If you have health or mobility concerns, consult with your doctor before beginning a new physical activity.

Let go of your fears and social anxiety. Recruit a friend, neighbor or family member to join you on your new adventures and activities.

Imagine the exhilaration after accomplishing a new feat. Be proud of pushing limits and taking on new challenges.

Whatever you do, get moving! Sitting on the couch or resting in bed causes endless health problems.

Go online and search for ways to get involved in local fun events or recreational activities. Check out community centers and senior citizen centers. Ask your medical team for suggestions. Find something to keep yourself engaged and moving.

And guess what? You don’t have to spend a fortune to get physically active. Invest in a good pair of walking shoes and start exploring your neighborhood or a nearby park. Not only will you be more physically active and likely feel better, you’ll engage in social interaction, which is also great for one’s mental health.

Consider Trying

  • Bicycling (Regular or Recumbent) NOTE: Investigate a 3-wheel bike to aid in balance and avoid tipping over
  • Walking, Hiking or Pushing your young grandchild or great grandchild in a stroller
  • Table Tennis or Bowling
  • Kayaking, Sailing or Canoeing
  • Pickleball, Tennis, Shuffleboard, Badminton, Corn Hole and Horseshoes
  • Swimming, Water Aerobics or Water Walking, which is great for joints and doesn’t require swimming skills
  • Yoga, Tai Chi or Zumba
  • Golf, Miniature Golf, Bocce Ball, or Croquet
  • Yard Work like Gardening, Raking, Digging and Planting
  • Bird Watching NOTE: Put out an inexpensive bird feeder and watch the feathered friends come. Without realizing it, you will stimulate your mind as you research what type of birds are visiting. You’ll have full body movement by filling bird feeders. Wonderful year-round treat for your mind and body.

“Motion is the Lotion.” Start moving.

Learn from New Experiences

Stay cognitively sharp and alert while learning something new. Break out of old patterns. Light up your brain while stretching out of your comfort zone. New experiences keep us young and vibrant. They help us retain memories and think clearly.

Babies experience the world with awe and a sense of wonderment and play. This can be you as you learn and experience new things.

Be spontaneous and open to new adventures.

For Example:

  • Plant something new in your garden. Basil, for instance. Nurture its growth and then go online and learn how to freeze it. Or plant flowers and begin making floral arrangements for yourself and/or others. Learn pressed flower art.
  • Begin to sew, embroider, crochet, quilt or knit. Many churches have groups that make items for those with terminal illnesses or newborns.
  • Try painting, sketching, ceramics, pottery, beading, woodworking and/or card or jewelry making. Build and paint bird houses.
  • Plan a trip to a new domestic or foreign location. Travel. Upon return home, document your memories by scrapbooking or creating an online photo album and/or video.
  • Experiment with new foods and recipes. Invite a neighbor you’d like to know better. Enjoy the fellowship and the meal. Consider home brewing with a DIY beer-making kit.
  • Volunteer where your interests lie. Perhaps it’s the zoo or the botanical center or maybe your place of worship or local school.
  • Start a neighborhood board game night. Or work together on a massive jigsaw puzzle. Participate in fantasy sports leagues and work on crossword and Sudoku puzzles. Join a card or chess club. Say “yes” to Trivia Game Nights. Bonus: Stretch the brain while socializing and maybe even making new friends.
  • Research and practice being an improv comedian or storyteller.
  • Write or record your autobiography and family history.
  • Explore participating in local performing arts like dance troupes, karaoke, acting, juggling, magic and choral groups.
  • Learn a foreign language or how to play a musical instrument like the piano or a ukulele.  Upgrade your computer skills.
  • Restore a vintage car and attend classic car meetups. Rebuild an old RV.
Don’t neglect your mental health needs. Allow yourself time to have some real fun.

Remember, you are allowed to have some fun before all of the work is done. Be spontaneous. Accept invitations even if it means putting off the household or yard chores.

Enjoy the small pleasures in life. You’ve earned it!

Final Note

Maybe it’s hard for you to have fun. You’ve worked most of your life and carried a ton of responsibility for the family. Perhaps you’ve lived a scheduled, structured or routine life. Now you’re retired and urged to enjoy life and create new adventures. This may seem weird or stress you out. You may even feel like you don’t know how to begin to “have fun.”

Take a breath. Understand this feeling is normal. Over time, you likely will begin to participate in physical activities and new experiences to enrich your life. You will find meaningful ways to have fun in a way that satisfies you.

Always keep in mind that you are doing yourself a favor by having fun. It’s good for you and everybody loves people who are fun and living life with the maximum amount of joy.

Finally, know it is your right to also just REST. Don’t feel pushed into doing when you need to rest. Avoid shaming yourself for “just being.”

Age My Way 2022: May is Older Americans Month

Each May the Administration for Community Living (ACL) Home Page | ACL Administration for Community Living leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month (OAM). The 2022 theme is Age My Way, an opportunity for all of us to explore the many ways older adults can remain in and be involved with their communities.

Older adults play vital, positive roles in our communities – as family members, friends, mentors, volunteers, civic leaders, members of the workforce, and more. Just as every person is unique, so too is how they age and how they choose to do it – and there is no “right” way. That’s why the theme for Older Americans Month (OAM) 2022 is Age My Way.

Older Americans Month is a great opportunity to celebrate our parents, grandparents and all of those special older individuals who have impacted our own lives. Let’s all look for opportunities to give back to the older adults in our lives and to help them live more independently as they age.

While Age My Way will look different for each person, here are common things everyone can consider:

Planning: Think about what you will need and want in the future, from home and community-based services to community activities that interest you.

Engagement: Remain involved and contribute to your community through work, volunteer, and/or civic participation opportunities.

Access: Make home improvements and modifications, use assistive technologies, and customize supports to help you better age in place.

Connection: Maintain social activities and relationships to combat social isolation and stay connected to your community.

Diverse communities are strong communities. Ensuring that older adults remain involved and included in our communities for as long as possible benefits everyone.

  • Get involved.
  • Share in the event or celebration with an older adult.
  • Offer transportation.
  • Donate to a cause.
  • Cheer on the older adults in your life.

History

In 1963, President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens met to address the growing concerns of America’s 17 million individuals ages 65 and older. At the time, one-third of all seniors lived in poverty with few social programs available to help support them.

To raise awareness of the problems facing seniors and to honor them, then-President Kennedy and the Council proclaimed May as Senior Citizens Month.

Senior Citizens Month Becomes Older Americans Month

Two years later, in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson passed the Older Americans Act of 1965 and formally declared May as Older Americans Month. But the act did much more than raise awareness or encourage community involvement – although it did both of these things well.

Johnson took Kennedy’s proclamation and intentions a step further by taking action that resulted in positive change, financial assistance and federal support for older Americans.

The Older Americans Act

Established the Administration on Aging, the first federal agency designed to address the struggles of older Americans.

Introduced nutrition programs, transportation assistance, federally funded adult day care, legal assistance and other services for seniors.

Paved the way to passing the Medicare program to offer health care to seniors.

Older Americans Month in the Recent Past

The proclamation didn’t end with Johnson, either. Every president since has offered a formal proclamation declaring May as a time to remember and honor older Americans. Communities organize events, fairs, and fundraisers focusing on seniors.

How to Bring Christmas Joy to Elderly Loved Ones

Christmas is associated with tradition and family gatherings. The music, food and decorations all come around year after year to remind everyone the holiday season is here.

Our seniors understand these traditions more than any others. They are generally the ones who’ve passed them down and given them meaning to the younger generations.

There are many benefits of spending time with elderly loved ones during the holidays.

Christmas can be depressing for older adults as they recall people and things they’ve lost over time. While it’s good to honor these deceased loved ones, it’s better for one’s mental health to share stories, create new memories and participate in traditional Christmas events and activities.

Spending time together as an extended family can boost everyone’s spirits, and even lower the risk of depression.

3 Simple Actions That Bring Joy

Decorate

Ask everyone to bring a certain number of their favorite ornaments and holiday decorations. Share the story of the ornament’s history and joy it brought to your life as you place it on the Christmas tree. 🎄

Hang wreaths on doors and windows and place holiday decorations throughout the home.

Bonus: All of these activities require movement. Your elderly loved one is getting quite a lot of physical activity while enjoying each of these activities.

Socialize

Gather together and watch favorite holiday movies. Share stories of your family’s past Christmas gatherings. (Hopefully most are positive.) Bake and decorate cookies and work on arts and crafts side-by-side. How about a craft from the past-paper snowflakes?

If your family is lucky enough to have a pianist, join around the piano and sing carols. Better yet, bundle up and surprise neighbors and friends by caroling at their front doors. 🎵🎹

Bonus: Recalling past Christmases enhances memory and keeps the brain healthy, as does socialization. Music has the power to reconnect us to joyous past memories. For seniors, it can be quite nostalgic to relive the magic of past Christmases.

Get Online

Using technology during the holiday season isn’t all bad. It can be quite positive, especially if your loved one has limited mobility. 💻

Set a date and sit side-by-side to help them purchase a few gifts through online shopping-free delivery, of course.

Teach them how to send online Christmas cards.

Virtually connect through technology and schedule a time to bring all of the family together through a video call using applications (apps) like: Apple FaceTime, Google Hangouts or Skype. Share joyful highlights of your year, or even watch a favorite holiday movie together. It can make all feel a bit closer if the entire family can’t be together for the holiday.

Bonus: Each of these will lift your loved one’s spirits, reducing depression. Learning online skills strengthens the brain.

Hint: Many seniors still have a strong preference for receiving personal mail through the USPS. If this is your aging loved one, be sure to send them a physical card with a handwritten loving, uplifting message.

Caring

Showing our elderly loved ones we are thinking about them during the holiday season doesn’t have to be stressful or burdensome. You can easily show they are not forgotten by incorporating established holiday traditions and using technology.

Do keep in mind how they may be feeling. They used to be “in charge” of making the holidays joyful. Now, as they’ve aged and lost some of their abilities, they may have relinquished the holiday merriment to a younger generation. There may be a sense of loss. But, incorporating the simple steps above, a sense of joy can still exist.

PS: The best gift you can ever give is the gift of time from your busy life to create special moments together.

Retirees: How to Plan for Next Pandemic

Covid-19 Wake Up Call

Many rejoiced! Covid was over. Life was getting back to ‘normal’.

Or, so it was thought until the recent Delta variant crept back into the everyday news cycle.

For a few brief months, when all believed this nasty virus was tamed with vaccines, Americans delighted in seeing families coming together again to celebrate and reconnect.

What Will We Do Differently?

While we all tepidly approach our public lives again it’s time to pause a bit and ask what was learned during the pandemic.

At Craft LifeStyle Management we see children finally getting back into their parent’s homes. Grandchildren into grandparent homes and neighbors into older friend’s homes.

Some of what is found and reported is heartbreaking.

Real Life Story

Recently we were asked by an out-of-state family member to enter their father’s local home. Of course, they’d been frequently visiting with him via telephone during the pandemic since he was unable to manage other modern communications.

He always sounded good on the phone-laughing, joking and openly reporting what he’d eaten. He claimed he had no problem getting up and down the stairs and that his laundry was being done. Much laughter was had when he told a story about stained clothing from all of the cooking he’d been doing.

The out-of-state family had groceries delivered. A family friend about their dad’s age regularly checked on him by calling and driving by.

Everyone was doing their best to keep dad safe since he has cancer and COPD.

Here’s what was really going on during COVID times.

Dad lied. Or, perhaps didn’t want to alarm, or bother, anyone.

The Truth

The family received their vaccines and confirmed dad had his. “Yup, all taken care of.”

They came to visit-all excited to hug and see each other.

To their dismay and heartbreak, when they arrived at the family home, it was nothing like their anticipated “Norman Rockwell family gathering.”

It was pure sorrow.

He was not washing clothes or cleaning. He was depressed and lonely.

He was not eating well.

Sure, the groceries were delivered; however, he didn’t want to cook. Instead, he ate all processed food and snacks. Thank goodness he had access to these even if they were mostly unhealthy.

Dad was unable to get up and down the stairs where his bed was. Instead, he was sleeping, eating and basically surviving on the couch.

The family took him directly to the emergency room 40 minutes away. He was not admitted but was given liquids and sent home.

Outcome

Dad is now living with his out-of-state family. He is not happy about having to abruptly leave him home, causing another level of depression.

The family is trying their best to figure this out.

What Learned

  • Telephone calls, Zoom meetings and Facebook messages cannot take the place of in-person interactions. The pandemic highlighted the fact that many older people are not familiar, or comfortable, with the latest technology and struggle to make meaningful contact with loved ones.
  • Parents have a habit of sheltering their children from bad news.
  • There is an increased awareness of taking care of one’s mental health. Globally, the impact on mental health from the pandemic has been devastating. There will be no “normal” way to adjust and re-acclimate to life after the events of this past year. A Kaiser Family Foundation poll reported that up to 45 percent of adults experienced negative mental health effects due to the pandemic – and an even higher percentage in those who serve as family caregivers for older senior loved ones.
  • Retirees are experiencing a role reversal. During the pandemic parents were getting instructions from their children. “Don’t leave the house. Order groceries online. Watch church services on your computer, etc.” Many are trying to understand what these roles look like post pandemic.
  • Easing back into the real world can be hard. Regaining physical strength and emotional resilience are necessary to thrive in this new post pandemic world. Most were living in fear and isolation for so long it’s hard not to want to emerge fully confident and active. However, after months of inactivity and diet changes, and likely lost muscle mass, it’s best to take it slow to adjust to this still uncertain world.
  • Adult children gained insight about their own retirements and how they want to age. Where would they want to live during a pandemic? Are they financially prepared? Would they be able to support themselves in an economic downturn?
  • Families are discussing adapting their houses and lifestyle to have their parents share a home with them.
  • Senior-living industry is adapting to this upheaval, planning for the future. Some have moved isolation units to the main floor instead of upper floors, allowing for access to the outdoors for fresh air and sunshine. Many placed clear panels in doorways so residents could see and talk safely to visitors. Future buildings will likely have smaller groups of units in the building rather than several dozen units down a long hallway. Even the HVAC systems are being re-thought-circulating air over smaller areas. And, communal dining and group activities will now likely be reinvented and done in smaller groups.

Definition

The term “Religion” used here is derived from the Latin religare, meaning to “tie or bind.” In other words, religious communities (Catholic, Protestant, Baptist, Jewish, Buddhist, etc.), are tied or bound by shared beliefs.  

Religion as a Habit

Does growing older make one more religious?

Scholars debate this. Some argue that as one thinks about his own mortality and does a major life review, he is drawn toward religion or spirituality.

Others say that if someone practices a certain religion throughout his life, this practice continues as he ages.  Maybe his faith even grows deeper with maturity since aging influences our interactions with life.

At Craft LifeStyle Management, we have found clients who’ve changed their faith over their life find peace in referring back to the different religions and examining the similarities.

Following the practices of one’s church seems to be a life-long habit for many of our clients. In other words, they practiced what they were taught in their childhood homes throughout their lives.

This doesn’t mean; however, if you weren’t a churchgoer or religious before identifying as a senior citizen that you can’t explore it now. You certainly can. It’s never too late to learn something new.

Most faith communities would likely welcome you regardless of where you are in your faith journey.

Religion Benefits

There are many benefits to being part of a faith-based community. These include:

  • Social Support. A church community is a tremendous source of social support for many senior citizens. They not only attend weekly services but also participate greatly in other church sponsored organized events like Bible studies and day trips or tours. And, retirees often fill a majority of volunteer duties within their churches. Interacting with peers while volunteering for a good cause is a Win! Win! It’s proven to cut down on loneliness and depression.
  • Purpose. Joining and actively participating in a church provides a much-needed sense of meaning or purpose in one’s life. By this time most retirees have completed their professional quests, and, if they had children, are empty-nesters. Rather than sit at home and brood about a life gone by, joining and participating in a faith-based community provides PURPOSE-a reason to get up each morning.
  • Mental Health. Regardless of denomination, faith and religion provide a positive and hopeful approach to life. This attitude is especially important when facing illness and coping with the loss of a spouse or close friends.
  • Peace. Faith-specific guidance, care and practices are extremely important to devoutly religious people, especially when they are battling a terminal illness or nearing death. This faith-specific attention by a religious person offers comfort and peace in a time of great need.

10 Ways Faith-Based Communities Can Help Senior Citizens

Here are some tips and suggestions for places of worship to consider to make regular church attendance safer and easier for senior citizens.

1. Provide transportation to the community for worship and fellowship.

2. Ensure accessibility for canes, wheelchairs and walkers, including in the restrooms.

3. Provide a sound system that is easily heard regardless of seating location.

4. Make anything that must be read large enough to be read. For instance, hymn numbers.

5. Provide large print bulletins and Order of Worship publications

6. Have amplified hearing devices available.

7. Reserve seating for those with limited mobility and diminished hearing.

8. Easily identify restroom locations.

9. Establish a ministry for shut-ins: Scheduled visits, telephone calls, mailings, prayer cards, etc. [Churches must be vigilant and thorough in screening any parishioner going into another’s home.]

10. Live video stream worship services and connect small church groups using the Internet. Offer technical support during the early stages.

Here’s one client story about faith and re-building relationships.

Our client had not talked to his three children since his wife died over a decade ago.

Each of the children had changed or modified their religion, causing much aggravation for their father. He had failing health when we were hired.

He spoke about his three kids all the time, but with anger and hurt about their leaving the church and its beliefs. He truly loved and missed them but couldn’t get over their decisions about religion.

It was so sorrowful that religion kept the kids away. It always turned into a fight. Once their mother passed, they were done!

Craft LifeStyle Management has worked with this client now for three years.

We are delighted that he is now interacting with two of his three children and his grandchildren.

Our goal was not to bring anyone back to another’s beliefs. Instead, our goal was for him to have somewhat of a relationship to heal each of their hearts. Each, in their own way, is such a kind and loving soul!

They do not see one another every week-more like once a month-for a few hours at a time.

It is going great.

Granted, our client will say, “They don’t stay long enough,” or “Only one of my grandkids came this time.”

But he ALWAYS has a smile on his face and talks about what they did.

One of his kids can’t stay in the house. “It’s Dad’s turf.” Or, it angers him. So, we suggested he pick up Dad for a picnic lunch at one of the adult grandchildren’s homes. This is now their “go to” method.

It may only be for an hour or so, but considering it’s been 10 years, this has brought peace and calm to the family, and to our client.

New Love after 60-It’s Possible

Everyone deserves LOVE.

Most folks desire a deep connection, including seniors who may still long for companionship and someone to fall in love with.

How to Find a New Love

How does one go about finding love again if (s)he hasn’t dated in decades?

Many will quickly advise using the Internet. In addition to safely using Internet dating sites, you may also like to try

  • Friends and Family Referrals-The often-dreaded blind dates.  Your friends and family know you best. Don’t automatically refuse. Try it. Take the stress off yourself by starting small. Meet for coffee or a stroll in a public park-an hour or less. You each decide afterwards if you want to spend more time together.
  • Neighborhood Socials-Don’t be a wallflower. Mix, smile and connect. Maybe you aren’t fond of groups. Ask a friend to join you but don’t hide behind him/her. Commit to talking with others. It’s quite possible you have a lot in common with your neighbors. HINT: During COVID many have been isolated. Perhaps you can start a driveway gathering where neighbors bring their own beverages and a lawn chair. Everyone social distances while being social. Connecting is always good for one’s soul, but especially during the Pandemic.
  • Church or Synagogue Activities-Join a small group and attend events.
  • Out and About at the dog park, coffee shop, museum, wine tastings, bookstore, theatre, gym, public park, etc. Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation. HINT: Today it’s okay for women to make the first move. Learn to flirt again. Remember, no one will come and ring your doorbell. You have to put some effort into making and keeping friends. Think about what your interests and hobbies are and then do them. Engage with your community. Read to children at the library. Volunteer in city parks. Build birdhouses for state parks. Just do something.
  • Past Connections-Social Media sites like LinkedIn and Facebook help make this so much easier today. Is there someone from your high school class who may have lost a spouse that you’d like to re-connect with? How about a former work colleague or a cousin? Find them online and start chatting. Or, pick up your telephone and call. They are likely to appreciate the reconnection as much as you do.

Receive Love

Remember, LOVE is not only received from another adult.

HINT: Don’t always expect your children and grandchildren to call first. Make the effort to reach out and stay connected. You are happy to hear from them when they call. It’s the same the other way around too.

Pets also make great companions if you have the ability and time to care for them. HINT: If you have a dog, it’s a great reason to go to the dog park and meet other owners.

And, remember, being in love and having companionship may result in a happier and healthier life.

Creating Holiday Joy for Family Members with Dementia

2020 has been difficult for everyone.

COVID Pandemic. Isolation. Quarantines. Presidential Election. Job Loss. Business Closures. The list of challenges continues, for many.

Maybe your tradition has always been to celebrate with family and friends. This year it’s strongly suggested you limit those interactions due to COVID.

So, are you feeling the excitement of the upcoming Christmas season or are you more of a Ba Humbug personality? 

Whichever way you lean, when it comes to the Christmas holiday, putting others before yourself most often results in good for everyone-the giver and the receiver.

This is especially important if your loved family member has Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Here are some suggestions to create holiday joy for those you love suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia.

Show Up as Your Best. Be Forgiving & Patient. Avoid Correcting.

As simple as it sounds, sometimes just showing up with your best behavior is the finest gift you can give anyone, especially an aging relative with dementia.

Have realistic expectations. Don’t expect to carry on an in-depth conversation. Certainly, don’t bring up past wrongdoings. Let those go during your visit, if not forever.

The person you’re visiting is not whom he or she once was. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that destroys the memory.

Instead, patiently listen to them. They likely will mess up historical facts and maybe even refer to many by the wrong name. Don’t push them to remember. Avoid correcting them. It only frustrates and upsets them, and you.

Try to solicit memories that seem like reality to them. Listen to the time in their life they seem to be living in at the moment.

What a tremendous gift you will give by allowing your loved one with dementia to recall favorable past memories and speak aloud about them, factual or not.

Be Inclusive

Depending on the stage of dementia your loved one has, include them in activities, especially safe annual traditions.

Did your family always attend the annual town Christmas tree lighting or have breakfast with Santa Claus? Continue these traditions and take your loved one along. Again, only if it is safe to do so. Watch your loved one. Wandering is common for those with Alzheimer’s.

NOTE: Never force your loved one to leave comfortable surroundings. Once their memory is to the point of being unable to follow conversations or if they can’t comprehend what is going on around them, changing their environment can be very upsetting. Your intention of creating a joint memory is commendable but they are unlikely to recall it. Always error on the side of staying inside and being safe and content rather than experiencing outside noises they are no longer used to.

Instead of rolling out the cookie dough or putting the cookie pans in the oven, maybe your loved one with dementia can help ice or sprinkle colored sugar on the baked cookies. Or, pack cookies in tins and boxes or help wipe the countertops and sweep the floor.

NOTE: For those loved ones with more advanced dementia, give them one tin and a bunch of cookies. When it is full, empty the tin and restack the cookies. We have to have humor! Watch how many times they lick their fingers, touch everything else around them, etc. Note their merriment and joy. This one can be their tin of cookies to take with them.

Find ways to include them based on safety and their level of dementia.

Maybe create new traditions like watching holiday movies snuggled together on the sofa or driving the neighborhood to see holiday yard decorations.

Don’t overdo activities. Try to stick to their normal routines as much as possible to avoid confusion and stress. Quality time trumps quantity.

And, always include them in conversation even if your patience is tested.

Allow them to reminisce about the holiday traditions. You may hear the same story repeatedly. Listen anyway.

Gift Giving by Stage of Dementia

The Alzheimer’s Association https://www.alz.org/nebraska recommends you gift by stage of dementia.

Early Stage

  • Activity books like crossword puzzles, word searches, Jumble words or Sudoku.
  • Coloring books or color by number books with larger crayons that are easier to grasp
  • Homemade photo books including happy memory images
    • HINT: Choose a 4×6 book so it fits onto a lap easily
    • Wall hanging picture board with large images and names under each photo
    • HINT: Labeling photos also helps caregivers initiate conversation with your loved one
    • HINT: Include pet and animal photographs. A dementia client once “found herself back on the family farm” whenever she looked out her room window.  The family helped created a photo book with images of her parents, farm animals and the family pet. She had this book with her at all times.
  • Music and movies from your loved one’s era to stimulate past memories
  • Hair brush
  • Gift certificate to hair salon in facility, if that is their home.

Middle Stage

  • Large clock that shows time and date
  • Automatic medicine dispenser
  • Automatic night lights set on a timer
  • Simple crafts they once enjoyed
  • Identification bracelet
  • Membership in wandering response service
  • Location tracking device
  • Service gift cards like lawn, handyman, restaurant, food delivery, etc.
  • Easy to remove clothing

Later Stage

HINT: Focus on sensory stimulating gifts like

  • Soft, fluffy bathrobe in a favorite color
  • Cozy lap blanket
  • Stuffed Animal
  • Hand lotion in favorite scent
  • Favorite food treats
  • Comfortable clothing and shoes with Velcro straps
